Black nurses are 8% of the profession, less than that in leadership. But have steadily held over 80% of bedside and nursing home positions. This statistic alone speaks to the lack of diversity and its value in the profession of nursing, especially in leadership positions.
Understanding value and knowing your worth is one of the greatest gift the the minority nurse can give themselves. Be open to how you can use your nursing degree and become a useful resource to those who appreciate what you bring to the table. Don't be afraid to take your critical thinking skills to the boardroom of another aspect of healthcare, medicine or public health. This understanding has served me well.
It's important to seek mentorship and have great conversations with those stakeholders who can help you navigate your career, your skills and your diversity. It is ok, if it is not nursing.
