THE MAKING OF MAUDE CALLEN

The role of the midwife is not often discussed or thought of when one considers the profession of nursing. In our film, Year of the Nurse and Midwife: A Film Project, we explored this role more closely giving homage to the legend Maude Callen.

The World Health Organization designated the year 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. As I set out to do the film, I knew I wanted to bring to screen a figure that most nurses and people had never heard of. It would be Maude Callen.

Design with Purpose

“As a new writer and producer I realized it was my job to find the story and present the script to the director. This is fine if you are a huge production company, but I am solo. So, I had to be set designer as well. It was purpose that guided me.”

The very thought of trying to magnify pertinent contributions of an historical figure is daunting, because they all are. So, when set designing for Maude Callen's piece in the film, I had to choose the area of interest that centered around so many variables, ( i.e.budget), which made it even more difficult. In my case, I was blessed with an amazing Director, who guided me all the way.

Stun Your Audience

Be original, show off your style, and tell your story.

It was important for me to take her off the page and bring her to life. I wanted people to actually SEE her. I think we did a great job.
